Peterborough GP Trainer of the Year

Huge congratulations to Dr Peresh Gela who has been named as Trainer of the Year by Peterborough GP Speciality Training.

He has been a trainer for 14 years, supporting doctors in their training as GPs. Over the years he has worked with at least one trainee GP directly per year and has provided guidance for many more in his role as educational supervisor, helping the trainees assigned to other colleagues in the practice.

Dr Gela said: ‘It is about working with trainees to help them in their independent practice as a GP. Part of that is to understand that people have different needs and different approaches. This lovely award that they surprisingly bestowed on me is for GP training in Peterborough but we also have in practice medical students, physician associates, pharmacy trainees and nursing trainees in the practice. I and my GP colleagues get involved in all their training.

‘Our role is to give the students as broad an experience as possible given the patients and cases that we see. It is really good fun, I love doing it. Working closely with someone to see them develop their potential is fantastic.’

Dr Gela’s current trainee is Dr Katie Blaylock. She said: ‘I nominated Dr Gela for this award as he has massively supported me in my ST2 year. He has encouraged me throughout to help me not just reach my potential, but to go beyond that - he's given me areas to work out but always includes the good too.

‘When I had issues with my own health he gave me the options I needed to help me manage my workload, and I have no doubt he would have supported me with adaptations had I needed them. He gives good advice and help where needed but helps me to find the solution myself rather than giving it directly and doesn't jump in too soon or overstep when supervising. I feel very lucky to have been supported by Peresh for the last year!’
